7 Signs Your DIY Website Isn’t Working (& How to Fix It)

Your DIY website got you started. It worked for a while, and maybe it’s still working mostly fine.

But the business you’re building now isn’t reflected in your DIY site. You know where you’re headed, but if your website doesn’t communicate that clearly to your dream customers, it’s often a sign you’re ready to evolve.

I see this all the time with web design clients. They have a DIY website that isn’t bad, but just isn’t positioned for how they want to scale. They’ve outgrown it.

Here are seven common signs your DIY site isn’t working anymore and what to do about it depending on your budget.

1. You’re Embarrassed to Share Your Website Link

There’s a difference between a website that functions “fine” and one that you’re actually proud to share.

If you find yourself internally cringing or saying some variation of “sorry, my website is a little outdated” every time someone asks for your link… that’s a glaring sign you’ve outgrown your DIY website. It’s no longer a reflection of your level, so you’re hesitant to share.

2. You’re Not Getting Inquiries

Your website should take visitors on a journey. As soon as they land on your homepage, there should be a clear path for them to follow to learn more about you, your services, and ultimately, book a call or buy from you.

If your website is getting traffic but you’re not seeing inquiries, this is usually because there’s friction somewhere along the customer journey. Maybe your CTAs aren’t clear, prospects are having trouble finding the information they need, or your booking process is confusing.

3. You’re Attracting The Wrong Clients

Your branding and website’s job is to attract and speak to your ideal client. If you’re getting inquiries from misaligned prospects, the problem is usually due to a disconnect in the messaging or visuals on your website.

That may mean you need to revisit your website copy OR that you need to nail down your brand’s visual identity to start attracting the type of clients you want to attract (and repel the ones you don’t).

4. You’re Constantly Explaining Your Pricing

As business owners, there is little that’s more frustrating than feeling like we have to justify our pricing.

Explaining your general pricing structure is one thing. But if you notice prospects are more often than not balking at your prices, it probably means they’re struggling to understand the value you provide. Your website simply isn’t communicating your skill level, and why you’re worth it, so potential clients have sticker shock.

5. You Keep Tweaking, But Something Feels Missing

As a web designer, I work with so many amazing business owners who are incredibly creative. But when it comes to their website, they struggle to execute their ideas. This often leads to spending hours endlessly tweaking, only for an end result that still feels… off.

Sometimes the missing piece truly is having an expert on your side to help pull the creative vision out of your head, implement it strategically, and skip the guesswork.

6. It’s Eating Up Time You Don’t Have

Maybe you initially DIY-ed your website to save money, but if you’re spending way more time than you’d like tinkering in the backend, it might be time to find another solution.

When small updates start turning into all-day tasks that make you want to pull your hair out, doing it yourself stops being efficient.

Something I always advise clients is to think about the opportunity cost: what else could you accomplish in your business, or how could you better serve your clients if you had that time back?

7. You Feel Boxed In and Unable to Scale

A lot of business owners with DIY sites eventually reach a point where they feel their website is holding them back from growing further.

Evolving and expanding your business should feel exciting. But if the thought of actually updating your website to reflect those changes is too overwhelming, you’ll either stay small or settle for a just “okay” website that doesn’t reflect where you are NOW.

What to Do If You’ve Outgrown Your DIY Website

Dare I say it: You should be proud of the DIY website you created. Even if it’s not working for you anymore, it got you started.

But now it’s time to evolve, and that starts with letting go of “good enough.”

Leveling up from a DIY site is a big step as a business owner. Depending on your budget, there are a few different possible solutions here.

Low-Tier Investment: Website Support Services

If you have a website you’re proud of but feel overwhelmed at the never-ending to-do list that just keeps getting longer, consider website support services.

I created my website support and maintenance service, Website Support Day, for the business owners who need a web designer in their back pocket but don’t want to start over from scratch.

Mid-Tier Investment: Website Template

Ready to say goodbye to your DIY site, but not quite ready to invest thousands into a fully custom site? Purchasing a website template is the perfect middle-ground.

There are tons of beautiful, user-friendly website templates you can purchase and customize yourself without having to build from scratch. Or, you can purchase a template and hire me for Showit template customization services so it’s even easier for you.

High-Tier Investment: Custom Website Design

If you need a lot of complex functionality built into your website, want a creative partner to guide the strategy, or just want something that’s 100% unique and built for you, it’s probably time to think about investing in a custom website.

With my custom web design services, you’ll get the expertise of a professional and walk away with something that’s polished with aesthetics and functionality strategically interwoven.

Investing in custom website design is even more effective if you also invest in branding. This way, your brand and website work together to create a stronger, more cohesive online presence.
